To be played against a Hero/Vigilante type.
Setting: Modern.
Name: Yun Carter
Birth Name: Hyun-Ju Pyon
Alter-Ego: Shade
Age: 28
Species: Meta-Human(by accidental cause)
Alignment: Neutral Good
Profession: Various part-time jobs. Thief on call.
Sister: 16 years old Min-ji
Singing voice similar to: Yuqi
Appearance
Green eyed Asian, she has a toned athletic body. Not very feminine, 5'8 tall. She doesn't know how to apply makeup or nail polish. Even her clothes are most likely athletic and gender neutral.
Shade's Appearance
Her nightly alter-ego is perceived to be male. A device embedded within her mask modifies the sound of her voice to that of a man. Her outfit is full body black with leather armor at the legs, arms and torso. A full head black mask and a slick pair of shaded goggles. It allows her to be completely anonymous.
Personality
Even though she's far from a born killer, she's one to hold a grudge and would kill if it meant to protect those she loves. Prideful tomboy, she would hide any weakness behind an angry front, not daring to show her tears to anyone. Her patience has limits, mostly when it comes to assholes, idiots and children.
Not much of a reader, she's more of an athletic type, loving to break a sweat and move around instead of staying seated for too long. Blunt, brutally honest, she often doesn't care if she offends or hurts people's feelings. Although she tries not to attract attention, she tends to get in trouble for not letting anyone step on her feet, belittle or disrespect her.
Playing the violin might be a way for her to channel her emotions at time, but otherwise she resorts to alcohol and one night stands to try and forget her problems. She is a functional alcoholic.
Social Relationship: She despises hypocrites, the wealthy snobs and anyone who think they're above others. Even though she likes having people around, she doesn't want too much friends because of her situation, not letting anyone too close to her. With that she hardly trusts anyone, already too well acquainted with the criminal scum of the city's underground; the kind that would backstab their best friends for their own benefits. Her small group of normal civilians as friends are keeping her sane even though they are kept in the dark about her life situation.
Family Relationship: She and her sister had never been close to their parents, but grew up with a solid sibling bond. Her sister means the world to her and she would sacrifice herself if it promised her sister to live a better life. However, she sometimes entertained the idea of letting her sister die in order to free herself from the shackles of this blackmailing situation with her boss.
Abilities & Weaknesses
She can melt into a dark shape that can travel on any surface regardless of gravity. Any object or clothing on her would morph along into the black surface. That way, she can slip through any paper thin passages. In that form, she is untouchable, cannot be grasped and hard to injure, as anything passing through would only scratch her due to her molecules separating for that brief moment before joining again. However, if anything was to stick through her shadow form, her molecules would take too long to join in order to cover the object, resulting in a stab wound. If the item is too long, she might be unable to cover it and would result in being pinned to the surface it was stabbing through.
In shadow form, she can solidify a specific part of the body, like a hand for example, so that she could open a door. She's also capable of restraining someone if her shadow form is over them, as if standing there with her arms around them, without them being able to pull on anything tangible.
Light is her biggest weakness. Too much focused light directed onto her shadow form would destabilize its structure and force her to revert back to solid shape. Even in solid shape, if she is not wearing clothing that blocks light from coming through, she would be strongly affected by strong directed light, like a stage's spotlight for example, and it could make her dizzy, headaches, rashes and eventually burn. She can see clearly in darkness, but brightness is blinding and require eye protection even from a sunny day. Sunlight is uncomfortable and even painful on her skin when exposed. It would maybe take ten minutes for her skin to display third degree burns if uncovered and held still under the sun on a cloudless day.
Background
Born in North Korea, she immigrated to America illegally at the age of 2 with her parents. They were living in poverty until her sister's birth. Both children had not been planned and the couple knew they had to find other ways to provide for their survival. Her parents struggled to keep any jobs they would find as they were trying to learn the language. Meddling with criminals already for their fraudulent immigration passports, they eventually made a deal with a crime boss named Anton Spence.
They were given the helm of a small Korean restaurant that would front as an establishment of illegal gambling. From the age of 13, she would attend school during the day and work as waitress at their restaurant while her mother would be taking care of her baby sister. When she finished high school at 19, she went to work two jobs as well as helping out her parents with the restaurant from time to time. Being old enough to understand what was truly going on in the restaurant's basement and the shady people that would be the majority of their customers, she was told to keep quiet.
When her father told his boss that they wanted out of the business and crime organization, the boss would make him an offer. If her parents wanted out right away, they would have to give their children up to be used in different ways by the organization. Without giving Hyun-Joo any choice, her father gave them a counter offer: to let his older daughter do jobs for them for a few years to pay whatever debt they had left. Thankfully, the boss accepted and so began Hyun-Joo's thieving career. Thankfully, the years of martial arts training since her childhood had allowed her to defend herself when situations would go wrong, but she was far from perfect in her first year of thief jobs.
Her parents realized their debt was not shrinking fast enough as the years went by. So three years later, when Minji was 10 and Hyun-Joo turned 22, they planned to escape to a different country. Her father had the audacity to steal money from the restaurant's safe after closing hours, had Minji and his wife packed up with the minimal, ready to go, while Hyun-Joo was still on a job.
Hyun-Joo had made quite a reputation for herself, growing her skills as a pick-pocket and drug delivery jobs on a motorcycle that the crime gang would lend her. Her parents contacted her cell phone, told her to meet them somewhere without giving too much information. When she met with them at a parking lot, they told her to get in, not ask questions, that they were going on a road trip. The younger daughter didn't understand the gravity of the situation, believing the road trip story while Hyun-Joo knew the dangers of what they were putting themselves in. Leaving her motorcycle parked there with the helmet and keys, she got on board her family's car and they drove off.
When they had barely reached the neighboring city, black vehicles knocked them out of the road to incapacitate their car as it crashed into a tree. Nobody was badly injured, everyone still conscious, they would be taken captive in the black vehicles and brought to meet up with the boss.

How she got her powers
Four years after the death of her parents, when she was 26, now known as Yun, had been given a bigger job quite different from their usual targets. She was to sneak into a tech lab and plug a USB key into their computer. It would give her partners waiting outside in a van, full access to the lab's database. They had already set the camera system on a loop before Yun's infiltration.
As there was nothing for her to do while it was taking way too much time, she began to snoop around, yet always cautious of the security guards patrolling the building corridors. When she went into a storage room, she started to look at all the strange tech, being careful not to press any buttons. Then an alarm went off and lights were flashing red. In her earpiece, she heard her team from the van rush her into retrieving the USB key not to leave the evidence and to get out of the building as quickly as possible. Barely having time to reach the computer and unplugging the key that the security guards were already in the room pointing their guns at them. A mask covering all but her eyes was enough to keep her identity concealed.
As they were blocking the way from the air vent from which she had first entered, she retreated as quickly as possible into the storage room and barricaded the door behind. There was no window, but there was an air vent. Trying to pile up boxes and climb up the shelves to reach the vent, the guards finally made it through and started shooting in her direction. Their bullets ricocheted on some of the tech. A glass container broke on a shelf above her, letting a gooey silver liquid drip from the shelf onto her clothes, soaking through to her skin. As it wasn't hurting her, she didn't take the time to wipe it off while still being shot at. Still climbing, a bullet hit a large flashlight looking device that emitted a bluish ray of light so strong that it even blinded the security guards. The moment the blue light hit her skin where the liquid has sunk in, she felt pain like never before.
Falling off the container tower she had built to climb to the vent, her body appeared to be melting onto the ground, turn into the same gooey material that had landed on her and then seem to completely vanish as if the liquid had evaporated. One of the guards managed to shoot the light device enough to shut it off, but there was no trace left of the thief.
From there, Yun, in a new shadowy form, made her way across the building floor, slipping under the doors that were not hermetically sealed and made it out into an alley. Regaining back her physical form, in shock and awe, she returned to her team at the van and completed the mission to their disbelief. On the security cameras, they saw the inside of the storage room until there was a blinding light and that she had vanished.
